Forty citizens commended for helping police fight crime (with photos)

     Forty citizens who helped the Police fight crime were commended at the Good Citizen Award (GCA) Presentation Ceremony today (June 18).

     Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Police Director of Personnel and Training, Mr Alfred Chau Kwok-leung, said development and progress in society brought a number of challenges to policing work. Support from members of the public was paramount in the combat against crime. He commended the award recipients for their bravery and alertness, and took the initiative to help Police fight crimes.
 
     Noting that this year was the 40th anniversary of GCA, the CEO of the HKGCC, Ms Shirley Yuen, said at the ceremony that HKGCC played an important role in the scheme. HKGCC had been the sole sponsor of GCA since it was established in 1973 with the aim to encourage members of public to take initiative to assist the Police to fight crime. With partnership of the community and HKGCC, Ms Yuen hoped Hong Kong could become a safe place to live and work.
         
     The member of the Fight Crime Committee, Mr Yeung Yiu-chung, said the bravery of award recipients demonstrated positive energy which was the most precious and inevitable element in building a safe and harmonious society.

     With the help of today﷿s awardees ﷿ 34 men and 6 women ﷿ more than 40 persons were arrested for a variety of offences including theft, indecent assault, burglary, robbery and wounding. Each of them received a certificate and a cheque of $2,000.
    
     Sixteen awardees helped the Police arrest 13 culprits involved in 11 mobile phone snatching cases while another seven helped Police arrest seven men involved in seven indecent assault cases.

     Presented twice a year, the GCA is organised by the Police Public Relations Branch and sponsored by the HKGCC.
