SJ visits dispute resolution facilities in Singapore (with photos)

     The Secretary for Justice, Mr Rimsky Yuen, SC, started his official visit in Singapore today (April 2), meeting with the Attorney-General, Mr Steven Chong Horng Siong, SC, and the Senior Minister of State of the Ministry of Law, Ms Indranee Rajah, to discuss matters of mutual interest including the direction of legal policy in both jurisdictions.

     Mr Yuen visited the Maxwell Chambers, which provides alternative dispute resolution (ADR) facilities and services in Singapore. Mr Yuen met with Mr Philip Jeyaretnam and Mr Ban Jiun Ean respectively, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the Maxwell Chambers. Mr Yuen also met with Mr Minn Naing Oo, the Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, which is housed in the Maxwell Chambers. Mr Yuen exchanged views with them on the latest development of ADR in the international context, and highlighted the Department of Justice's objective to enhance Hong Kong's status as a regional hub for legal and ADR services.

     In addition, Mr Yuen met with the Dean of the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, Professor Simon Chesterman; and the Dean of the School of Law, Singapore Management University, Professor Yeo Tiong Min, to discuss matters including the latest development of Singapore's legal education.

     Tomorrow (April 3), Mr Yuen will meet with the Chairperson of the Singapore Mediation Centre, Madam Justice Belinda Ang Saw Ean, to share views on the promotion and development of mediation.

     He will also have a luncheon meeting with the President of the Law Society of Singapore, Mr Lok Vi Ming, and certain senior members of the legal and ADR fields to strengthen ties with Singapore's legal and ADR sectors.

     Mr Yuen will return to Hong Kong tomorrow evening.
