Cirrhosis of the liver nearly claimed Chan Kok-man's life in 2005. His wife, without hesitation, donated part of her liver to save him. They have embraced sport to keep fit since their operation, and will compete in the 1st Hong Kong Transplant and Dialysis Games to be held on November 24 and 25.
The event encourages transplant recipients to engage in sports activities, and raise organ donation awareness.
The Hospital Authority has recorded 209 cases of organ donation this year, as of June. However, 2 466 patients are on the waiting list for organ transplants.
The Department of Health established the Centralised Organ Donation Register to make it more convenient for people to register their wish to donate organs after death, so more patients can benefit. As at end-October, the number of donors on the register exceeded 107 000.
The story appears today (November 18) on news.gov.hk in both text and video format.
