The Hung Ka Po Cantonese Opera Troupe will perform three classics selected from the repertoire of Poon Yat-on, the late master of "chou" (comic) roles, in August. The three works to be staged are "Goddess of the Luo River", "Time to Go Home" and "Merciless Sword Under Merciful Heaven".
The performances will start at 7.30pm. Details are as follows:
August 19 (Sunday)
Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall
"Goddess of the Luo River"
Cast: Lung Koon-tin, Wan Fei-yin, Chan Hung-chun, Lai Yiu-wei, Cheng Nga-kai and Yuen Siu-fai
Tickets: $100, $160, $200 and $250
Cao Zhi falls in love with the gifted beauty Zhen Mi. Bent on taking away his younger brother's love, Cao Pi asks his father for permission to marry Zhen. Cao Pi begins to purge dissidents after his father dies. When Cao Pi repents for his misdeeds, Zhen leaves on the pretext of observing a seasonal ritual in the mountains and throws herself into the Luo River.

"Time to Go Home"
Cast: Lung Koon-tin, Wan Fei-yin, Chan Hung-chun, Lai Yiu-wei, Cheng Wing-mui and Yuen Siu-fai

Young general Wen Pingsheng and his wife Pinniang are deeply in love but are forced to part with each other. After Wen leaves home for war, his mother gives Pinniang a maid and some gold to keep her from ever returning, and tells her son that his wife has died. Aghast at the news, Wen weeps at Pinniang's tomb, and his touched wife comes out to meet him.

"Merciless Sword Under Merciful Heaven"
Cast: Lung Koon-tin, Wan Fei-yin, Chan Hung-chun, Lui Hung-kwong, Cheng Wing-mui and Yuen Siu-fai
Tickets: $100, $160, $200 and $250
Wei Chonghui, a descendant of General Han Xin, has an innocent affection for Lu Daoci, but they find themselves torn between their families' feud and their own love. The Weis and the Lus are eventually reconciled and fight against their enemy, and the couple gets married.
These performances by the Hung Ka Po Cantonese Opera Troupe are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients. (Limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.)
A pre-performance talk (free admission, conducted in Cantonese by Lung Koon-tin and Chan Hung-chun) will be held at 4.15pm on August 31 (Friday) at the Conference Room, Tuen Mun Town Hall. Limited seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
