In response to a newspaper report on the security of the e-Channel system today (January 16), the spokesman of the Immigration Department said that the department was very concerned about the report and had contacted the relevant media for further details and was actively taking follow-up actions with the system contractor to confirm whether it was due to an isolated technical problem at a particular e-Channel.
As an established practice, all e-Channel facilities and equipment are strictly tested before use or after maintenance. Thorough testing of e-Channels at all control points has been arranged to ensure their reliability. Moreover, we have asked the supervisors of all control points to step up vigilance in monitoring the use of e-Channels by passengers.
Members of the public are reminded that under Section 42 of the Immigration Ordinance, the use of false identity for immigration clearance is an offence, and an offender is liable to imprisonment for 14 years and a fine of $150,000.
