SCED leads delegation to visit Chengdu

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, will lead a Hong Kong delegation to leave for Chengdu tonight (August 29) to attend the sixth meeting of the Mainland/Hong Kong Science and Technology Co-operation Committee.

     Mr So will also visit a research institute and a laboratory there to promote collaboration and to learn more about the latest developments of science and technology in Sichuan and the western region of the Mainland.

     Tomorrow morning, Mr So will co-chair the sixth meeting of the Mainland/Hong Kong Science and Technology Co-operation Committee with the Vice-Minister of Science and Technology of the Central People's Government, Dr Cao Jianlin. The meeting will review the Committee's work since the fifth meeting, endorse the work plan for the next year and contemplate stronger collaboration on various fronts.

     The Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), Miss Elizabeth Tse, will speak on how Hong Kong could complement the National 12th Five-Year Plan on the science and technology front at a discussion forum during the meeting.

     The delegation comprises representatives from the Innovation and Technology Commission, the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the University Grants Committee, six universities in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and a number of local research institutes. They will also visit Chengdu's International Science and Technology Co-operation Base and will return to Hong Kong on August 31.

     Mr So will leave Chengdu for Urumqi, Xinjiang, on August 31 to join the HKSAR Government delegation led by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, to attend the first China-Eurasia Expo. He will return to Hong Kong on September 2.
