TAC briefed on new private driving instructors' licences
********************************************************

The Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) was today (June 5) briefed on the outcome of the Government's review in early 2009 on the need to issue new private driving instructors' licences.

The Transport Department will proceed to issue new private driving instructors' licences for the existing three groups of vehicles up to their benchmarks. The number of licences for Group 1 (Private Cars and Light Goods Vehicles), Group 2 (Light Buses and Buses) and Group 3 (Medium Goods Vehicles, Heavy Goods Vehicles and Articulated Vehicles) will be increased by 347, 55 and 58 respectively.  The department will invite applications in July.

䩕The decision to issue new licences was made after extensive consultation with the transport trade.  It will help maintain a healthy supply of private driving instructors for on-street driver training,蒅 TAC Chairman Ms Teresa Cheng said.

䩕We expect an enthusiastic response from the trade.  The Transport Department is confident that the first batch of the new licences will be issued in the fourth quarter of 2009,蒅 Ms Cheng said.
