SCOLAR continues to promote proper Cantonese pronunciation
**********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research:

The promotion of proper Cantonese pronunciation initiated by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) has the full support of radio stations in Hong Kong.

Following Metro Radio and Commercial Radio, RTHK is continuing the promotion by producing radio segments to introduce Chinese words that may easily cause the problem of "lazy articulation" in Cantonese among students and young people. A language education expert, Dr Cheung Kam-siu, Instructor, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, will also appear in the segments to demonstrate the proper Cantonese pronunciation of these words.

The segments will be broadcast on RTHK Radio 2's "My Heart Will Go On" between 9pm and midnight, from Monday to Friday, starting tomorrow (March 31) until May 9. It will also be available on SCOLAR's website at www.language-education.com

Established in 1996, SCOLAR advises the Government on language education issues and on the use of the Language Fund.
