Expo provides careers and educational information
*************************************************

Young people and job-seekers can obtain information on careers, education and training opportunities by visiting the Education and Careers Expo 2007 organised by the Labour Department and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

With "Reaching Out for Brighter Prospects" as its theme, the expo will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai, from February 1 to 4.

A total of 498 exhibitors including government departments, public bodies, professional associations, vocational training bodies and private enterprises will take part in the expo this year. They will provide career information such as entry requirements, job prospects and promotion opportunities in various trades as well as educational and training opportunities locally, in Mainland China and other countries.

"With a sustained growth of the economy, there is a greater demand for manpower. On the other hand, employers also raise their expectations of the qualities of job-seekers," Senior Labour Officer (Careers and Employment Agencies), Mrs Louisa Poon Mei Yen said today (January 29).

"In view of the keen competition in the job market, job-seekers and students who will graduate soon are encouraged to visit the expo to gather information on career prospects and educational and training opportunities to better equip themselves.

"The Youth Pre-employment Training Programme and the Youth Work Experience and Training Scheme of the Labour Department provide pre-employment and on-the-job training to fresh school leavers to enhance their employability. A counter and a talk will be arranged to introduce the two programmes in the expo," Mrs Poon said.

"A series of careers talks will also be organised and some experienced practitioners from various professions will talk about the latest developments in their trades and share their experience. Topics of the talks include 'Hong Kong Securities Institute - Gateway to Financial Career', 'RICS Brings You to the World of Surveying Industry' and 'Working in the Media'.

"Visitors can also obtain information on the Labour Department's diversified employment services. They can try the user-friendly vacancy searching terminals, or browse through our Interactive Employment Service on the Internet and Careers Information website for the latest vacancies and careers information," she said.
