Twenty-three convictions were recorded last month (December 2006) for breaches of anti-pollution legislation enforced by the Environmental Protection Department.
Sixteen of the convictions were under the Air Pollution Control Ordinance, five under the Waste Disposal Ordinance, one under the Noise Control Ordinance, and one under the Water Pollution Control Ordinance.
The heaviest fine in December was $30,000, assessed against a person who discharged substandard liquid livestock waste.
A person exporting controlled waste without a permit and failing to engage service of a waste collector received a concurrent sentence of six months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, for each offence.
An effective sentence of 200 hours of community service was handed down against a person who exported controlled waste without a permit and failed to engage the service of a waste collector.
