Voluntary enrolment scheme for egg wholesalers and distributors
***************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (January 9) urged traders involved in wholesale and distribution of poultry eggs to furnish relevant business information with the CFS for better regulation of poultry eggs sold in Hong Kong.

"The CFS plans to extend the scope of the voluntary enrolment in the egg importer scheme, launched in the middle of last month, to cover local egg wholesalers and distributors," a CFS spokesman said.

"The information collected would be uploaded onto the CFS website (www.cfs.gov.hk) to assist retailers to procure eggs from these traders. Enhanced transparency in the distribution network of poultry eggs could also help the centre to trace the source of eggs involved in food incidents."

Under the current voluntary enrolment scheme, information from 35 poultry egg importers has been released on the CFS website.

"The Government intends to introduce legislation to regulate imported poultry eggs. The above measures would help traders familiarise themselves with the upcoming regulations and pave the way to successful implementation of the law in future," the spokesman said.

Enrolment forms are available at the CFS on 43/F, Queensway Government Offices, Queensway, and at the centre's website. Completed forms should be submitted to the CFS.

Enquiries about the voluntary enrolment system should be made at the CFS during office hours at 2867 5582.
