    Music of the Guangdong Region Series: Cantonese Tunes down the Ages, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be staged in February, 2007.

     The Ensemble of Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe will bring to Cantonese music lovers a fascinating programme including gaohu, suona, honguan, xylophone, saw, zheng and vocal performances.

     In the concert are national class performers Ni Huiying, Li Jusheng, Huang Jian, Zhong Weiming, Li Haoming, Zhou Shuangxi and Pan Qianqian.

     Led by Huang Jian, the troupe is made up of many musicians of National Class standing. The group plays Cantonese music, incidental music for theatre productions, and accompaniment, with a forte for Cantonese music. Some of the Cantonese opera productions they have accompanied, such as "King Rui and Lady Zhuang", "Love of the Land and Flowers", "Moon and Shadows", have won awards at regional and national level. The group has also appeared in many major shows. It has given highly successful performances in France, England, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong and Macau.

     The "Cantonese Tunes down the Ages" concert will be staged at 8pm, February 9, 2007 (Friday) at the theatre, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $160 and $100 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. (Limited tickets for students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.)

     A pre-concert talk (in Cantonese) "Cantonese Music of Southern China" will be held at 7.30pm on February 8, 2007, (Thursday) at AC1, 4/F, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Speakers include Tong Kiu-woon, Huang Jian and Ni Huiying. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
