Applications invited for "Kicking Off from Tung Chung" futsal competition

    Sports lovers will next month have a chance to flex their muscles and show their skills in a special football activity "Futsal Competition and Carnival". Applications for the mini soccer competitions are open from today.

     The event which is free and jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Islands District Office, in association with the Islands District Council, the Hong Kong Football Association Ltd, the Association of School Heads of Islands District, the Islands District Sports Association and the Lantau Junior Police Call will be held on January 13 and 14, 2007 at the square adjacent to Yat Tung Estate Shopping Centre of Yat Tung Estate, Tung Chung.

     The futsal (indoor soccer) activity is one of the programmes under the "Kicking off from Tung Chung" project initiated by the department. Through providing various recreational and sports activities, the project is aimed at building a healthy lifestyle and extending social circles for people especially youngsters in Tung Chung.

     The first day (January 13) futsal play-in is for walk-in participation while competitions for those who have applied will be held the next day (January 14). For the competition, a single knock-out system will be adopted and each match will last three minutes. Each team should comprise three members. The mini soccer competitions will take place in a fenced-off football field measuring nine metres by 15 metres.

     Applications for the competitions will be accepted until December 15. Those applicants who live, work or study in Islands District will have priority.

     If there are vacancies left after the first round of applications from Tung Chung residents, applications will be accepted from outside the area from December 20 to 22.

     The competitions will be divided into three categories - Open, Youth and Junior. The Open Category is for people of all ages; the Youth Category is for those aged 13 to 18 while those aged under 12 can take part in the Junior Category. Each team should comprise three to five players and no goalkeeper is needed.

     In each category, the champion and first and second runners-up will each be awarded a trophy and there will be a medal for each player.
