Results of the 2005 Annual Surveys of Storage, Communication, Banking, Financing, Insurance and Business Services
**********************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released today (November 30) results of the 2005 Annual Survey of Storage, Communication, Financing, Insurance and Business Services; and the 2005 Annual Survey of Banks, Deposit-taking Companies, Restricted Licence Banks and Representative Offices of Foreign Banks.

According to these two surveys, total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the six industries covered, viz. the storage, communications, financing (except banking), business services, insurance and banking industries, amounted to $748.6 billion in 2005, up by 15% over 2004.

Comparing 2005 with 2004, total receipts of the storage industry rose by 22%, mainly attributable to the growth in import and export trades. Total receipts of  the insurance and financing (except banking) industries increased by 19% and 17% respectively, mainly attributable to the buoyant local stock market and the sustained growth in life insurance business. Total receipts of the business services, banking and communications industries increased by 13%, 12% and 7% respectively.

Owing to the special feature of business operations in the insurance and banking industries, gross surplus and value added of these two industries were not compiled.

Gross surplus (i.e. total receipts less operating expenses, compensation of employees and value of purchases of goods for sale) of the other four industries [viz. storage, communications, financing (except banking) and business services] taken together amounted to $178.5 billion in 2005, up by 15% over 2004.

Value added of these four industries taken together increased by 14% over 2004 to $119.2 billion. Within this total, value added of the storage, financing (except banking), business services and communications industries increased by 43%, 26%, 7% and 6% respectively.

Principal statistics in respect of the six industries covered by these two surveys are given in the table attached.

The 2005 Annual Survey of Storage, Communication, Financing, Insurance and Business Services was conducted from January to October 2006, while the 2005 Annual Survey of Banks, Deposit-taking Companies, Restricted Licence Banks and Representative Offices of Foreign Banks was conducted from May to October 2006.
