Results of the 2005 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services

    According to the results of the 2005 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services released today (November 30) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the whole transport sector amounted to $418.0 billion in 2005, representing an increase of 11.2% over 2004.

     The value added of the whole transport sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $104.2 billion in 2005, representing an increase of 5.1% over 2004.

     The gross surplus of the whole transport sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, decreased by 1.5% compared with a year earlier to $48.8 billion in 2005. The gross surplus accounted for 11.7% of total receipts in 2005.

     Within the transport sector, the four largest major industry groups in terms of value added in 2005 were (1) air transport, (2) land passenger transport, (3) services incidental to transport, and (4) ocean and coastal water transport. They together accounted for 85.7% of the total value added of the whole sector.

     In the air transport industry, total receipts amounted to $84.4 billion in 2005. Value added increased by 9.5% over 2004 to $30.9 billion. Gross surplus was $14.0 billion and accounted for 16.6% of total receipts in 2005.

     In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $32.6 billion in 2005. Value added increased by 4.1% over 2004 to $21.4 billion. Gross surplus was $9.0 billion and accounted for 27.5% of total receipts in 2005.

     In the services incidental to transport industry, total receipts amounted to $202.1 billion in 2005. Value added increased by 21.5% over 2004 to $20.8 billion. Gross surplus was $9.9 billion and accounted for 4.9% of total receipts in 2005.

     In the ocean and coastal water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $63.1 billion in 2005. Value added decreased by 5.2% from 2004 to $16.1 billion. Gross surplus was $9.9 billion and accounted for 15.6% of total receipts in 2005.

     The principal statistics for the transport and related services, with breakdowns by major industry group, are shown in the attached table.

     The survey was conducted from January to October 2006. More detailed survey results will be given in the "Report on 2005 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services". Users can download this survey report (in PDF format) free of charge at the "Statistical Bookstore, Hong Kong" (www.statisticalbookstore.gov.hk) of C&SD as from end December 2006.
