Fraudulent e-mails purporting to be issued by EAC
*************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Electoral Affairs Commission:

It has come to the attention of the Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) that some members of the public have received a fraudulent Chinese e-mail purporting to be issued by the commission on the subject of "Points to note on avoiding election traps", an EAC spokesman said today (November 16).

The spokesman pointed out that the e-mail was not issued, nor related to, the EAC. He said that if a member of the public sent an e-mail to the EAC, then the commission might make a reply by returning an e-mail. Otherwise, the EAC will not send out e-mails to members of the public under normal circumstances.

The spokesman called on members of the public to be vigilant, and if they had received any suspected e-mails purporting to be issued by the EAC, they should handle them with extreme care. If in doubt, they can call 2891 1001 to make enquiries.

An investigation into this e-mail was being conducted by the authorities. If necessary, the case will be referred to relevant law enforcement agencies.
