An installation art creation made with books will be on display at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library from tomorrow (November 17) until November 29.
The exhibition, "The Book's Cover ﷿ Works by So Yan-kei", incorporates books and bookshelves, giving viewers a new understanding of colours, books and the library itself, and also motivates them to explore the symbolic meaning of the artwork.
So Yan Kei received her MFA from the University of California in the US. In 1999, she was the first artist to represent Hong Kong in the artist-in-residence scheme held by the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York City. So specialises in the application of various media to create an eerie atmosphere, which stimulates the audience to think about issues such as time, space and identity.
So has received several awards and scholarships, including: The Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award (The Junior Chamber International Hong Kong, 2006), Rising Artist Award (Hong Kong Arts Development Council, 2003), Asian Cultural Council Fellowship (New York, USA, 2001), Freeman Foundation Asian Artist Award (Vermont, USA, 1999), Winner of Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial (1998).
"The Book's Cover" is So's most recent "site specific" installation. But viewers may also regard it as an "open declaration" of the artist. The whole work is composed of books on sociology, politics, psychology and public administration from which viewers are free to make their own connections.
The exhibition, the 10th of the Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme III, is organised by the Art Promotion Office (APO) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
