City of Love - Number of Blood Donors Receiving Award Reaching a Remarkable High

    To publicly recognize loyal blood donors who have achieved 25-time donations or its multiples during the past year, the Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) has been organizing annual Donor Award Ceremony to present awards to them.

     We are delighted to announce that this year the total number of donors receiving awards has reached a new high of 1,905.  In view of the number of award recipients, the BTS need to organize award presentation ceremonies on two separate dates. The first Ceremony has been held today (21 May 2006) for 1,660 donors who have achieved 25-time or 50-time donations.

     Today﷿s ceremony was officiated by Mr. Vincent W S Lo, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service Governing Committee; Dr. C T Hung, Cluster Chief Executive, Kowloon Central Cluster, Hospital Authority; and Mr. K. M. Chan, Secretary General, Hong Kong Red Cross.

     Early this year, the BTS has organized the 䩕Creative Blood Donation Short Film Competition蒅 by inviting public to produce a short film to promote blood donation.  The Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up of Secondary School Group and Open Group of the Competition also received awards in today﷿s ceremony.  Their winning short films will also be posted on the BTS web-site for public viewing.

     Among the award recipients, the youngest 25-time blood donor is Mr. Kwok Yat Hei.  He recalled that on his 16th birthday, his parents arranged a special activity ﷿ blood donation ﷿ to celebrate with him.  Since then, he has been donating blood regularly.  Being able to achieve his first-ever blood donor award at the age of 23, he is no doubt an outstanding role model that deserves commendation and recognition.  Coincidentally, the Hong Kong Red Cross has organized the 䩕Commemorating Special Days蒅 campaign with an aim to encouraging doing good deeds on special days.  Indeed, one can make a special day extra memorable by giving blood on the day.  Besides, youngsters who give blood on their 16th birthday (with parents﷿ consent) will be awarded the 䩕16th Birthday Blood Donation Certificate蒅.  The BTS encourages youngsters to donate blood regularly to help those in need in the community.
