Stanley Prison inmate found hanged

    A prisoner was found by staff of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) hanging himself with a piece of torn bed sheet in his cell of Stanley Prison shortly after 1am today (May 18).

     First aid was immediately given at the scene by CSD staff and medical officer. The prisoner was then taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, where he was certified dead at 2.12am.  

     Police have been informed of the incident and an inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court. Investigation is being conducted by CSD.
 
     The 53-year-old prisoner, surnamed Lam, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in November 1987.
