The Bun Scrambling Competition came to a fruitful end early this morning (May 6) at Pak Tai Temple Playground soccer pitch.
On the start of a signal by the officiating guests, 12 shortlisted contestants, comprising all 12 men, climbed up a 15-metre-tall bun tower to snatch as many buns for the highest scores within the three-minute limit.
Divided from the bottom to the top into three zones, the tower was studded with buns representing one, three and nine marks respectively. For easy identification, the buns carried with them special stamps on the bottoms. The contestant who scored the highest marks from all the buns he scrambled was the champion.
After an exciting round of the competition, the trophy eventually went to Mr Kwok Ka-ming, who scored 705 marks. The first runner-up, Mr Lai Chi-wai, scored 681 marks. The second runner-up went to Mr Tsang Shun-man, who scored 601 marks.
To make the event more lively, the organisers has invited Islands District Council, Islands District Sports Association, as well as six other local groups on Cheung Chau to participate in the Invitation Relay.
Comprised of two members, each team has to get the designated buns on the bun tower in relay within the shortest period.
Finally, Islands District Council won the champion in 3 minutes 13 seconds to get their buns while the Petrel Athletic Association Limited was the first runner-up, who spent 3 minutes and 21 seconds. The second runner-up, Cheung Chau Sai Wan Ma Sing Temple Management Association, took 3 minutes and 59 seconds to finish the race.
Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee, the Bun Scrambling Competition received concerted support from the Islands District of the Home Affairs Department, Buildings Department, Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited and Cheung Chau Rural Committee, and sponsored by 3-D Gold Jewellery. The Hong Kong Mountaineering Union has also committed full technical support to the event.
The activity was well-received, attracting over 1,500 spectators at the soccer pitch and Cheung Chau Sports Centre.
