Festival-goers on Cheung Chau on Sunday (April 30) will have the chance to climb the famous bun tower as part of the "2006 Bun Carnival".
The chance to climb the tower will come during the climbing event in the carnival, which will run from 11am to 5pm at the Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground where this year's"Bun Tower Climbing Challenge" will be held.
By making on-site applications for "Bun Tower Climbing Challenge", festival-goers will be able to enjoy the fun and excitement of climbing the 14-metre tall tower used for the Bun Scrambling Competition.
The "Bun Tower Climbing Challenge" is divided into four groups -- the Master Group (aged 35 or above), Adult Group (aged 18 to 34), Youth Group (aged below 18 and at least one metre tall), and Family Group (a team of two and each member must be at least one metre tall).
The challenge has six sessions, with each session lasting for an hour. Participants of the six groups in each session who can reach the designated height on the bun tower in the shortest time will be the winners.
Souvenirs will be awarded to the winners in each session.
The climbing event in the carnival also offers lots of other festive programmes. The Hong Kong Mountaineering Union will give climbing demonstrations and there will also be traditional Chinese arts and crafts stalls.
People can enjoy variety shows like magic performances and traditional Chinese entertainment.
Festival-goers will have the chance to get special souvenirs featuring the buns.
The 2006 Bun Carnival is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), and is assisted by the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, Cheung Chau Rural Committee, Islands District Office of the Home Affairs Department and Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and sponsored by the Islands District Council and 3D-GOLD Jewellery.
A total of 12 finalists - to be selected on Saturday afternoon (April 29) - will enter the Bun Scrambling Competition to be held at night on May 5 at the Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground.
