Learning music in a fun summer camp will give young budding musicians new inspirations.
Applications for the "2006 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp" are now open. A well-received annual summer programme, the Music Camp offers young musicians the opportunity to receive training from renowned local, overseas and Mainland musicians and to share experiences with other budding musicians in a scenic, natural environment.
Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the 2006 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp will be held from July 23 to 30 (Camp A) and July 30 to August 6 (Camp B) at the Tso Kung Tam Outdoor Recreation Centre. Qualified young musicians aged nine to 25 are invited to apply.
Campers will participate in one of the intensive training programmes in band, orchestra or chorus as well as a balanced programme of musical and recreational activities designed for relaxation and development of musical skills. In addition, two concerts will be held at the conclusion of the camp to showcase the campers' achievements.
Residential campers may choose to join one of the music groups including Symphony Orchestra, Junior Chinese Orchestra, Children's Choir and Junior Symphonic Band in Camp A, and Chinese Orchestra, Junior String Orchestra and Symphonic Band in Camp B.
For the Children's Choir and Junior Symphonic Band, the camp fees per person are $350 for four days and three nights. For other music groups, the camp fees per person are $700 for seven days and six nights.
Day camp is also available for organisations and groups to share the delightful music and recreational activities of the campers. Camp fees per person per day are $36.
Renowned musicians participating in this year's training programme include the Music Director and Conductor of the Quincy, Illinois Symphony Orchestra Jack Ranney, the President of World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and Director of Wind Ensembles at the University of Calgary Dr Glenn Price, the Music Director and Conductor of Guangzhou Broadcasting Folk Orchestra Li Fubin, the Assistant Professor of Music Education at Westminster Choir College of Rider University Lynnel Jenkins and the Former Resident Conductor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Former Professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music Xia Feiyun.
Application forms are available from the Music Office's music centres or from the website www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. The deadline for applications for the residential camp and day camp are May 2 and May 20 respectively.
