To celebrate "4.23 World Book Day", the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has organised a series of reading activities, and readers borrowing library materials from HKPL tomorrow (April 23) will receive a free souvenir while stocks last.
"World Book Day" celebrations began today (April 22) with the prize presentation and launch of an exhibition of the winning entries in the "4.23 World Book Day Reading Report Competition 2006" held at the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL).
Speaking at the ceremony, the Convenor of the Subcommittee on Community Involvement and Promotion of Reading and Literary Art of the Committee on Libraries, Mr Cheung Chi-kong said the competition drew an encouraging response this year with more than 2,600 entries from
300 schools.
The competition, which comprises Chinese and English book report writing and bookmark design, was open to primary and secondary students. There are three categories in the book report writing competitions ﷿ Junior Session (P.4-P.6), Intermediate Session (S.1-S.2) and Senior Session (S.3-S.4). The bookmark design competition was open to junior primary students (P.1-P.3).
The English book report writing was introduced this year to encourage reading of English books. Over 400 entries were received.
Winning works in the two competitions will be displayed at the Foyer on the Ground Floor of the HKCL from April 22 to 30 and at 12 major and district libraries from May to July 2.
Three talks were held today (April 22) at the Lecture Theatre of the HKCL to mark World Book Day.
Columnist and culture critic Mr Shiu Ka-chun shared his experience in reading and book report writing in "Talk on Book Appreciation and Review".
Professor Chung Ling, Dean of Arts of the Hong Kong Baptist University and renowned Chinese novelist Mr Li Rui promoted writing in Chinese in the "Public Lecture: To Express Oneself Profoundly in Chinese Ideogram".
Professor Lung Ying-tai, renowned Taiwanese writer and culture critic shared her valuable experience in "'Translation, Language and Culture' Distinguished Scholars Lectures Series 2006: What German Feuilleton Reveals".
