Legco Information Technology and Broadcasting Panel's visit at Washington DC

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The delegation of the Information Technology and Broadcasting Panel of the Legislative Council of HKSAR left Ottawa and arrived at Washington DC on April 13 to continue its 9-day overseas study tour on public service broadcasting in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

On its first day of visit to Washington DC, the delegation met with the senior directorate of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the regulatory and licensing body of broadcasters, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) which is the funding organization to support public service broadcasters. The delegation received detailed briefings on the structure of US public broadcasting from Dr Irene WU, Director of Research, and Mr Thomas S Nessinger, Attorney-Advisor of Media Bureau of FCC as well as Mr Robert M Winteringham, Deputy General Counsel of CPB.

The delegation will meet with the Ombudsman of National Public Radio and one of its member stations Washington Educational Television Association, and the Public Broadcasting Service, a public non﷿profit media enterprise owned and operated by the nation's 348 public television stations, on April 17.

The delegation comprises Panel Chairman Hon SIN Chung-kai, Deputy Chairman Hon Albert Jinghan CHENG and Hon Emily LAU.
