United Nations Sanctions Regulations gazetted

    The Government today (March 17) gazetted the United Nations Sanctions (C?te d﷿Ivoire) Regulation 2006 and the United Nations Sanctions (Liberia) Regulation 2005 (Amendment) Regulation 2006.

     "The two Regulations implement sanctions against C?te d﷿Ivoire and Liberia imposed by the United Nations Security Council under Resolutions 1643 and 1647," a Government spokesman said.

C?te d'Ivoire

The United Nations Sanctions (C?te d'Ivoire) Regulation 2006 implements the following sanctions:

* prohibition against supply of arms and related material to C?te d'Ivoire;
* prohibition against provision to persons connected with C?te d'Ivoire of advice, assistance or training related to military activities;
* prohibition against making available funds, other financial assets, or economic resources to or for the benefit of persons and entities referred to in a list maintained by the relevant United Nations Security Council Committee;
* prohibition against importation of rough diamonds from C?te d'Ivoire; and
* prohibition against entry into or transit through Hong Kong of certain persons connected with C?te d'Ivoire.

     In line with Resolution 1643, all provisions, except those related to importation of rough diamonds, will expire at midnight on December 15, 2006. There is no expiry date on prohibition against importation of rough diamonds.  

Liberia

     The United Nations Sanctions (Liberia) Regulation 2005 (Amendment) Regulation 2006 renews the following sanctions:

* prohibition against supply of arms and related material to Liberia;
* prohibition against provision of certain technical assistance or training to persons connected with Liberia;
* prohibition against importation of rough diamonds from Liberia;
* prohibition against importation of round logs and timber products originating in Liberia; and
* prohibition against entry into or transit through Hong Kong of certain persons connected with Liberia.

     In line with Resolution 1647, the provisions related to importation of rough diamonds and timber products will expire at midnight on June 19, 2006. The remaining provisions will expire at midnight on December 19, 2006.
