One of the exhibits, a short utility knife. The handle of this small knife is finely cast in the form of fantastic beasts. This knife was made for export to Xiongnu in the Western Han dynasty (206 BC- AD 8). In the early years of the Han Dynasty, the Han Chinese were in a weak position relative to the Xiongnu, and many items were made in China in the Xiongnu style for export as gifts to Xiongnu leaders as a part of the policy of pacification through marriage. Running from tomorrow (March 17) until September 20 at the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, the "Ancient Chinese Weapons" exhibition features about 100 ancient weapons, giving visitors an insight into the military tactics, art and cultural beliefs of pre-Han China, and the development of the Chinese writing system.
