Customs officers of Man Kam To Control Point today (March 10) seized from an incoming medium goods vehicle 1,785 kg of unmanifested chilled pork, worth about $53,000.
A 41-year-old male driver was arrested. He will be charged with 䩕Importing unmanifested cargo蒅 under Import and Export Ordinance and 䩕Importing meat without an official certificate蒅 under Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance.
The seized meat will be handed over to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department for follow-up action.
At around 1426 hours this afternoon, Customs officers of Man Kam To Control Point intercepted an incoming medium goods vehicle, which arrived from Shenzhen declared to be carrying bread and cakes. Upon examination, Customs officers seized from the cargo compartment 1,785 kg of smuggled chilled pork, which was camouflaged by the bread and cakes.
Any person found guilty of 䩕Importing unmanifested cargo蒅 is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for 2 years; or on conviction on indictment to a fine of $ 2 million and imprisonment for 7 years.
Any person found guilty of 䩕Importing meat without an official certificate蒅 is liable on conviction to a maximum fine of $50,000 and to imprisonment for 6 months.
