LD job fair to enhance youth employment
***************************************

The Labour Department will organise a job fair "YWETS Job Express for Youths" at Olympian City on Saturday (March 11), providing more than 1 600 vacancies for youngsters.

The job fair will be held from 11.30am to 7.30pm at Central Atrium, ground floor, Olympian City 2, 18 Hoi Ting Road, West Kowloon.

The job fair is jointly organised by the department and seven training organisations. It aims to provide information about on-the-job training places for trainees of the Youth Work Experience and Training Scheme (YWETS) and youngsters aged between 15 and 24 with education attainment below degree level, to enhance their employment opportunities.

This is a thematic job fair for tailor-made training programmes. Eight tailor-made employment projects under YWETS and six companies will set up counters at the job fair, providing training places in various trades and industries.

The vacancies will cover such positions as IT administrative support trainee, account clerk, laboratory assistant, IT assistant, shop assistant, kitchen helper, waiter/waitress, club house assistant, estate assistant and tour assistant. Young people can submit applications on the spot and may be selected for on-site interviews.

The department will also display information on vacancies solicited from other employers for youngsters to apply.

Of the 1 600 vacancies, about 90% offer a monthly salary ranging from $5,000 to $8,000.

In addition, career talks on employment prospects and the latest development of various trades and industries will be held. Registered social workers will also provide on-site career counselling to youngsters to help them secure employment.

The YWETS, launched in 2002, provides six to 12 months' on-the-job training for young people aged between 15 and 24 with education attainment below degree level.

The YWETS offers a variety of tailor-made employment projects to cater for the needs and interests of trainees. Some 30 projects are offered covering such trades and industries as retail and wholesale, aviation, tourism, information technology, education, social services, entertainment and catering.

As at the end of February, more than 26 000 trainees had received training under the scheme. Another 14 500 trainees had secured jobs in open employment market with the assistance of their case managers.
