Charity sale of donated books today and tomorrow (with photos)

    A variety of books donated by the public are on sale for charity today and tomorrow (February 25 and 26) at three different locations in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories to support the Book Donation and Sale Campaign.

     More than 230,000 books had been donated by the public since the book collection campaign began last month (January).

     Speaking today (February 25) at the Book Donation and Sale Campaign launch, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Anissa Wong, said that the public's enthusiastic support to the campaign had been very encouraging since it started in 2002.

     She said the Hong Kong Public Libraries had received generous donations of books for the charity sale, and the proceeds to The Community Chest of Hong Kong had been on the increase year after year.

     Other officiating guests present at the Hong Kong Central Library today were the Chairman of Yuen Long District Council, Dr Tang Siu-tong; Chairman of Sham Shui Po District Council, Mr Tam Kwok-kiu; the Campaign Committee Chairman of The Community Chest of Hong Kong, Dr Dennis Sun; the Vice Chairman of the Agency for Volunteer Service, Mr Tang Kwai-nang; the Assistant Director of Home Affairs, Miss Monica Chen; Assistant Director (Estate Management) of Hong Kong Housing Authority, Mr Lai Ip-cheung and the Assistant Postmaster General (Business Development), Mr Dan Choi.

     The campaign is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Home Affairs Department, 18 District Councils, Hong Kong Housing Authority, Hongkong Post, The Community Chest of Hong Kong and the Agency for Volunteer Service with the aim of promoting reading, book sharing and helping the needy.

     The "Sale of Donated Books" this year will run from 10am to 6pm today and tomorrow at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Central Library (G/F, 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong), Kai Tak East Sports Centre (30 Luk Hop Street, San Po Kong, Kowloon) and the Main Arena of Yuen Wo Road Sports Centre (8 Yuen Wo Road, Sha Tin, New Territories). All books will be sold at $5 each with a limit of 30 books for each buyer. All proceeds will be donated to The Community Chest of Hong Kong.

     Crowd management measures may be implemented at the sales venues.

     Last year, more than 25,000 people participated in the sales with 195,000 books sold.
