Three employers fined $45,000 for wage offences

    Mr Yeung King-sau, a construction sub-contractor, and Miss Chiang Ya-chyi who runs an insurance business, were fined $20,000 and $15,000 respectively at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (February 21) for wage offences. Tam Kee Furniture Company Limited was also fined $10,000 at the Fanling Magistrates' Courts for the same offence.

     The three employers failed to pay wages to three employees in total within seven days of the termination of employment. The total amount of wages involved was about $14,000. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     According to Section 25 of the Employment Ordinance, wages due upon termination of employment shall be paid as soon as practicable, but not later than seven days.

     Any employer who fails to do so wilfully and without reasonable excuse is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for one year.
