Hong Kong Observatory launches "Weather Icon Design Contest"
************************************************************

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of its Internet website, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) today (February 21) launched a graphic design contest for weather icons. People are invited to participate by sending in new creative designs of weather icons for use in web pages.

The contest is to encourage public participation and absorb public views into the HKO website and promote effective dissemination of weather information to the public.

Winning weather icon designs may be adopted for use on the HKO weather website.

The Observatory established its Internet website in 1996.  It was among the first government departments to make use of the Internet to deliver service to the public.  The Internet has proved to be the most cost effective means of disseminating large quantity of constantly evolving weather information to a large number of individual users.  Over the past 10 years, the average monthly visiting rate of the Observatory website has increased more than 1000-fold.  The latest figure is around 50 million page hits a month.
