Fun-filled carnival for animal lovers and their pets
****************************************************

Animal lovers will have a chance to get together and share their experiences of keeping pets at the Carnival for Pets 2006: "Happy Pets ﷿ Happy Year of the Dog" at Sha Tin Yuen Wo Playground tomorrow and Sunday (February 18 and 19).

"This will be the fourth time that the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has teamed up with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) (SPCA (HK)) to organise the event," a spokesman for the department said.

"The past three carnivals were well-received by the public with more than 50,000 participants.

"Unlike the past three carnivals, participants are welcome to bring along other types of pets as well as dogs this year.

Fun-filled activities staged at the carnival will include a performance by the Auxiliary Police Pipe Band and a demonstration by the Police Dog Unit. Other activities include the "Lunar New Year Dress Competition" and the "Happy Doggie Games Area".

Also, there will be seminars and training demonstrations hosted by the SPCA (HK).

As well as providing a fun outing, organisers hope the carnival will encourage Hong Kong people to treat animals with kindness and respect.

"Animal lovers and their pets are sure to have a lot of fun at the carnival," the spokesman said.

He said dogs entering the venue should be at least five months old, in good health and microchipped. Puppies under this age or dogs in season will not be admitted.

Participants must produce valid documentation of rabies, distemper and parvovirus vaccinations on request. SPCA veterinarians will be present to monitor the situation.

The carnival will run from 11am to 6pm on both days.
