Holders of Documents of Identity for Visa Purpose with Smart Identity Card may use e-channels
************************************************************

Holders of valid Documents of Identity for Visa Purpose (DI) with smart identity cards may, from tomorrow (January 24), use the e-channels at control points for immigration clearance.

"Using the e-channel is simple. Travellers just need to insert their smart identity cards into the smart card reader at the entrance of e-channel," an Immigration spokesman said today (January 23). "The system will take a while to perform mutual authentication. Travellers can enter the e-channel when the gate doors open. After entering the e-channel, they should place their thumbs flat on the centre of scanners. Following successful identity verification, the exit doors will open and they may leave the e-channel."

The spokesman reminded DI holders to carry their DIs at all times when travelling in and out of Hong Kong. If immigration at the traditional counter is preferred, both the DIs and identity cards should continue to be presented to immigration officers for inspection.

More than 100 e-channels have already been installed at the Hong Kong International Airport, China Ferry Terminal, Hung Hom Railway Station, Macau Ferry Terminal and Lo Wu control points.

"The e-channel service will be extended in phases to other categories of Hong Kong residents. An announcement will be made in due course," the spokesman said.
