Military roles in Chinese Opera to be showcased

    "Actors in Military Roles in Chinese Opera" performed by renowned Peking and Kunqu Opera Wusheng actors and to be presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in March, will showcase various military roles in Chinese opera.

     Wushengis is one such role ﷿ young men with excellent martial art skills and who are brave, good fighters. Since the early days of Chinese opera 2,000 years ago, the martial art role has been indispensable in any production.

     Renowned Peking and Kunqu Opera Wusheng actors include Wang Ping and Zhang Youlin from Tianjin Peking Opera Theatre, Wang Lijun from Tianjin Youth Peking Opera Troupe, Lin Weilin from Zhejing Kunqu Opera Troupe and Zhou Long from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts.

     These top-class actors perform both civil and military roles with equal talent.

     Programme details are as follows:

March 16 (Thursday)
"Intercepting the Horse", "Investigation at the Jiaxing Prefecture", "Nocturnal Escape" and "The Pulley"

March 17 (Friday)
"The Recapturing of Happy Grove Inn", "The Incident on Changbanpo" and "The Incident at Hanjin Crossing"

March 18 (Saturday)
"The Incident at Elegant Vista Mansion" and "Retreat to Maicheng"

March 19 (Sunday)
"On Centipede Range", "Eight Mallets", "Bidding Farewell to His Mother and Killed by a Shower of Arrows" and "Rescuing His Sister at the Bright Sun Mansion"

     Performances will start at 7.30pm at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Lyrics and dialogue will be in Chinese and simplified English surtitles will be provided. Tickets priced at $320, $240, $180 and $100 are now available at all URBTIX outlets.

     Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
