Lunar year-end cleanliness activities
*************************************

The Government will launch a six-day Lunar year-end cleanliness activities and promotional campaign in 18 districts from tomorrow (January 22) until next Friday (January 27) in the lead up to the Lunar New Year.

The series of activities will appeal to people to observe personal and environmental hygiene during the time for house cleaning and refurbishing in welcoming the Lunar New Year.

The six days of activities, with the joint effort of 18 District Councils, various District Clean Hong Kong Committees and government departments, include cleaning of streets, rear lanes, common areas of public estates and old tenement buildings; inspection of hygiene black spots; home cleaning for the elderly; cleanliness contests; Lunar New Year cleaning carnivals, bus parades, as well as distributing cleaning kits and publicity materials.

"Most of the 13,000 participants of the Chinese year-end cleanliness activities are volunteers, including District Council members, District Clean Hong Kong Committee members, Area Committee members, District Hygiene Squad members, Mutual Aid Committee members and residents," a government spokesman said.

A three-month territory-wide cleaning campaign that began with the Community Cleanliness Day last November have received good response and active participation from the community. The Lunar Year-end events, climaxing with the cleanliness series, further remind people of the importance of personal, public and environmental hygiene.

"Although the cleanliness campaign will end soon, we should not lower our guard. The Government appeals to people enjoying festive celebrations in Hong Kong to give their support for building a cleaner and more hygienic Hong Kong," the spokesman added.
