The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today (January 20) publishes the January 2006 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, two feature articles entitled "External Direct Investment Statistics" and "Hong Kong Residents Working in the Mainland of China, 1995-2005" are included.
"External Direct Investment Statistics"
Direct investment represents investment which allows investors in one economy, on a long-term basis, to influence or have an effective voice in the management of an enterprise in another economy.
At the end of 2004, the position of Hong Kong's inward direct investment and outward direct investment at market value continued to be substantial, amounting to $3,521.9 billion and $3,133.6 billion respectively. Their ratios to GDP in that year were 273% and 243% respectively.
In 2004, DI inflow and outflow were $265.1 billion and $356.1 billion respectively. Taking DI inflow and outflow together, there was a net investment outflow of $91.0 billion.
This feature article presents an analysis of inward and outward direct investment of Hong Kong in 2004, based on the findings of the Survey of External Claims, Liabilities and Income conducted by the C&SD, supplemented by data from other sources.

"Hong Kong Residents Working in the Mainland of China, 1995-2005"
Along with the increasing economic integration between Hong Kong and the mainland of China, the number of Hong Kong residents who are required to work in the Mainland in their present job is on an uptrend.
To throw light on the detailed characteristics of such persons and their employment situation in present job, the C&SD conducts periodically an enquiry on "Hong Kong residents working in the mainland of China". This feature article compares the major findings of the enquiry conducted in 1995 and 2005.

The January 2006 issue of the HKMDS is now on sale at HK$80 per issue. Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables. It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong. Besides, feature articles in each issue can be purchased separately.
