A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department (CSD) today (January 14) said body searches, including of rectum and vagina, remained the most effective means for thwarting incidence of drug trafficking into penal institutions.

His comments followed the case of a woman remand in Tai Lam Centre for Women (TLCW) who had been found with six small bags of suspected dangerous drugs concealed in her body.

The spokesman said the 47-year-old woman was remanded in TLCW yesterday (January 13) evening on charges of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

The remand was taken to the Centre﷿s reception room where she was searched by CSD officers for contraband materials.

A transparent bag containing a total of six smaller bags with suspected dangerous drugs inside was found concealed in the woman﷿s vagina.

The case was reported to the Police for investigation.

The spokesman said there were 14 cases of dangerous drugs having been found on body, property and clothing during admission searches in 2005.

Searches were conducted by CSD officers under the supervision of senior officers, the spokesman added.
