"Science in the Public Service" Campaign launched today (with photos)
********************************************************

The "Science in the Public Service" campaign was launched today (January 13) by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang.  The year-long campaign is jointly organised by 30 government departments in collaboration with the Hong Kong Institution of Science and Hong Kong Education City.  The objective of the joint campaign is, through a series of public education activities, to let people know more about the scientific achievements of government departments and the application of science and technology in providing services to the public.

At the launch ceremony, Mr Tsang said this campaign highlighted the provision of world class services by 30 government departments through the development and application of science and technology.  "This amply demonstrates the strength of Hong Kong as Asia's World City."

Chairman of the campaign's organising committee and Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory Dr Lee Boon-ying, said the series of activities under the campaign included a major exhibition, popular science lectures, a symposium, school talks, displays on loan, visits to government departments and facilities, as well as an essay competition.  These activities would enable the public to know more how government departments were applying advanced science and technology to the provision of public services.

Immediately following the launch ceremony is a five-day joint exhibition (January 13 to 17) at the Exhibition Gallery of the Central Library, Causeway Bay, with display panels, interactive exhibits and games featuring scientific achievements of government departments.  During the exhibition period, people are welcome to attend popular science lectures (January 14 and 15) to be delivered by a number of government professionals at the Central Library.
