Young musicians to make it a romantic New Year's Eve

    Renowned conductor Robert Turrell and the new Gold Prize Winner (Open Class) of 2005 Schumann Piano Competition will perform a series of romantic music works with the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra on New Year's Eve.

     Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the "Romantic New Year's Eve" concert will be held at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong City Hall at 3pm on December 31.

     Robert Turrell, principal conductor of the Philomusica of London, the Soloists Ensemble and the Kent Sinfonia, is guest conductor of the concert. He has given performances in Europe, the United States and Australia.

     The Gold Prize Winner (Open Class) of the coming 2005 Schumann Piano Competition at Sheung Wan Civic Centre on December 28 will perform Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor together with the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra.

     The orchestra will also present Vaughan-Williams' Wasps Overture, Moross' Theme from The Big Country, Mascagni's Intermezzo Sinfonico from Cavalleria Rusticana, Prokofiev's Montagues and Capulets from Romeo and Juliet: Suite No.2, Johann Strauss Jr.﷿s Thunder and Lightning Polka, Strauss' Radetzky March, Tchaikovsky's Waltz from Sleeping Beauty and Arnold's Little Suite No.2.

     The Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1978. The 90-member Orchestra has worked with a number of overseas and locally renowned conductors and soloists in various performances and completed several successful concert tours to France, Israel, Cyprus, United Kingdom, Australia, United States, Singapore and Mainland China.

     Tickets priced at $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-priced concessions are available to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Recipients.
