Territory-wide campaign to promote road safety
**********************************************

Police will launch a territory-wide Road Safety Campaign from tomorrow (December 23) to January 2, 2006.  The campaign, comprising education and strict enforcement actions, is aimed at enhancing public awareness of road safety with focus on anti-drink driving.

From tomorrow to December 29, officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams will invite members of the public to take voluntary breath tests and distribute publicity leaflets at bar areas to appeal to the public not to drive after drinking.

Police figures showed that there were 13 617 traffic accidents in the first eleven months of this year, which saw a decrease of 103 cases when compared with the same period in 2004.  Among these cases, 69 involved drink driving.

"Motorists are reminded not to drive after consuming alcohol.  Offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and three years' imprisonment and penalised for 10 driving-offence points; or suspension from driving," a Police spokesman said.
