Hong Kong Customs seizes suspected cocaine at the airport (with photos)

     Hong Kong Customs seized about 1.3 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $1 million at the Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (April 21).

     A male passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Sao Paulo, Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia yesterday afternoon. During Customs clearance, Customs officers spotted suspicious X-ray images over his two check-in luggage bags. Thorough examination led to the discovery of a total of about 1.3 kilograms of suspected cocaine concealed in the luggage bags’ metal frames.

     The arrested man, aged 40, claimed to be a therapist, has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on April 24.

     Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
