CS visits Islands District (with photos)
****************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited Islands District this afternoon (May 6) to meet with Islands District Council (IDC) members and exchange views with Cheung Chau youths participating in the Islands District youth network development programme organised by the Islands District Office.

Mrs Lam first met with the IDC and listened to members' views on various issues of the district, including planning, transport, housing and environmental hygiene. At the meeting, some District Council members expressed support for developing Lantau and urged the Government to improve the ancillary transport facilities at Lantau.

Mrs Lam then visited Cheung Chau together with the Chairman of the IDC, Mr Chow Yuk-tong; the Chairman of the Cheung Chau Rural Committee, Mr Yung Chi-ming; and the District Officer (Islands), Mr Anthony Li.

When the party walked along the Cheung Chau waterfront, Mrs Lam was briefed on the Cheung Chau Ferry Pier improvement work and the ferry services during the Cheung Chau Bun Festival by Transport Department officers, and on matters relating to outside seating accommodation permission for waterfront restaurants by a Food and Environmental Hygiene Department representative.

Mr Yung also briefed Mrs Lam on the preparatory work for the parade and Bun Scrambling Competition to be held on May 14.

Afterwards, Mrs Lam visited the Food Recycle Land Education Centre run by the Cheung Chau Island WomenĄŻs Association. With funding support from the Environment and Conservation Fund of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government in 2012, the Centre recycles more than 300 kilograms of food waste daily from about 200 families and turns it into fertiliser for planting vegetables. Mrs Lam commended the Centre for its work in environmental education and encouraged the staff to continue to contribute to waste reduction.

Later, Mrs Lam exchanged views with Cheung Chau youths participating in the Islands District youth network development programme organised by the Islands District Office and visited the family of one of the network participants. The youth network development programme, launched by the Islands District Office in 2014, aims at encouraging participants to care for their community and learn more about it, as well as broadening their horizons and nurturing them to become future leaders through a series of activities. Mrs Lam said she was glad that this programme has been very successful and well received by district youths. She added that the HKSAR Government has all along been attaching great importance to youth work and is committed to providing young people with diversified development and learning opportunities. It will continue to strengthen networking and communication with youths at different levels.
