Upgrades to merchant shipping law proposed

     The Government has proposed to amend the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Oil Pollution) Regulation to implement the latest requirements prescribed by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships.

     The Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Oil Pollution) (Amendment) Regulation 2016 will specify requirements for the control of oil discharge of ships in operation. It will also impose requirements on the construction of specific oil tankers and set out the design standard for certain equipment installed on the tankers.

     The proposed amendments, gazetted today (April 22), will be tabled before the Legislative Council on April 27 for negative vetting.
