Organised by the Buildings Department (BD), the Building Safety Symposium cum Building Safety Week 2016 closing ceremony was held at the Kowloon Shangri-La in Tsim Sha Tsui today (April 22). Some 500 participants, including government officials, academics, building professionals and members from the building management sector, attended the symposium to exchange views on building safety issues.
Addressing the ceremony today, the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said the Building Safety Symposium provides representatives from the industry with an opportunity to get together to share their experiences and their knowledge about the application of new technologies. He hoped that the discussion today would bring together the participants¡¯ experience and knowledge to promote building safety in Hong Kong and rise to the challenge of ageing buildings more effectively in future.
The Director of Buildings, Mr Hui Siu-wai, thanked the participants for their active participation in today¡¯s activity. He said the Building Safety Symposium aims to establish a sharing platform for the industry to discuss building safety related issues, so as to create a safer and healthier built environment for Hong Kong.
A number of local and overseas speakers were invited to deliver speeches on building safety topics at the symposium. The topics were as follows:
* Overview on Building Safety in Hong Kong;
* Building Rehabilitation ¡ª Challenges and Opportunities;
* The Mandatory Building Inspection Scheme and Mandatory Window Inspection Scheme ¡ª Implementation and Challenges;
* The Role of a Registered Inspector and Its Challenges;
* Use of New Technologies in Building Safety;
* The Roles of the Minor Works in Building Safety;
* Measuring Moisture in Building Material; and
* Rights and Duties of Property Owners Under the Deed of Mutual Covenant & Building Management Ordinance.
Apart from the speeches by renowned speakers, the symposium also featured a talk and two panel discussion sessions.
The Building Safety Symposium was the finale to Building Safety Week 2016, marking the successful conclusion of the seven-day event. Over the past week, the BD organised a series of activities to help members of the public better understand building safety messages and foster a building care culture. Programme highlights included public talks, seminars for building professionals and the "Building Safety Pioneers Headline" TV programme.
