Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety operation yesterday (January 19). Through stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
A total of 70 verbal warnings and 1 497 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road traffic regulations during the operation conducted from January 13 to 19.
During the period, Police issued 1 228 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 139 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 25 summonses for climbing over a kerbside fence or through a central reservation to a carriageway.
"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
