Hong Kong Customs detects suspected case of smuggling smartphones at Man Kam To Control Point (with photo)
******************************************************

Hong Kong Customs detected a suspected smuggling case at Man Kam To Control Point yesterday (January 6) and seized 477 used smartphones worth about $1.1 million in total.

Customs officers yesterday intercepted for inspection an outgoing container truck which was declared as empty. Upon examination, false compartments at the axles of the trailer were found to contain a batch of used smartphones. The 61-year-old male driver was arrested, and the container truck and trailer were detained for further investigation.

Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.

Members of the public may report any suspected smuggling activities to the Customs' 24-hour hotline 2545 6182.
