The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) today (November 10) urged members of the public to continue to stay alert to fraudulent calls purporting to be made by OFCA's hotline (2961 6333) with a pre-recorded message. The message claimed that abnormal use of the called party's mobile phone was detected and his or her phone would be shut down in two hours.
A spokesman for OFCA said, "Subsequent to the reports received by OFCA on October 27 from the public on fraudulent calls purporting to be made by OFCA's hotline with a pre-recorded message, OFCA received yesterday (November 9) further reports from several members of the public that they had received phone calls purporting to be made by OFCA's hotline with a pre-recorded message recently. We wish to stress again that OFCA has never made such phone calls and would not make any phone calls with pre-recorded messages. We have already referred the reports to the Police for follow-up actions and once again urge members of the public to stay alert.
"We would like to remind the public again that OFCA would not make any phone calls with pre-recorded messages and would not contact them on behalf of any telecommunications operators. Members of the public should stay alert and report suspected fraudulent calls to the Police. If they have any questions regarding the status of their mobile services, they should first contact their telecommunications operators for details."
