The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, visited Central and Western District this afternoon (October 20) to gain a better understanding of the latest developments of the district. He visited an elderly centre and some old stores. He also met with representatives of traditional businesses operating in the district.
Accompanied by the District Officer (Central and Western), Miss Cheryl Chow, Mr So first dropped by the St James' Settlement Central and Western District Elderly Community Centre to learn about the daily life of the senior residents in the district.
He chatted with elderly persons and observed them participating in activities specially designed for the aged, including playing brain-training games on a touch screen. He encouraged the seniors to further adopt digital technology and enhance the quality and enjoyment of life.
Mr So then visited some old stores in Sai Ying Pun to see how they conduct their business and the impact on their operating environment following the opening of the MTR West Island Line. He also visited MTR Sai Ying Pun Station to see its special decor, which reflects characteristics of Western District.
Before concluding his visit, Mr So took the opportunity to meet with representatives of the dried seafood, Chinese medicine and ginseng business sectors to learn more about the operation of traditional wholesale and retail trades in the district. They also exchanged views on the prospects and development of Hong Kong's economy.
