Total bacterial count of "Harvey Fresh" Fresh Milk exceeding legal limit

     The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department noted that subsequent to having received complaints about strange taste while drinking a kind of "Harvey Fresh" Fresh Milk imported from Australia, the Centre has been following up on the incident closely and instructed the importer concerned to recall the affected products on August 28. The CFS today (August 31) announced that the total bacterial count of a sample of the product under the above-mentioned recall collected on August 28 was found exceeding the legal limit.

     Details of the product concerned are as follows:

Product name: "Harvey Fresh" Fresh Milk
Packing size: One litre
Use by date: September 6, 2015

     A CFS spokesman said, "A sample of the milk was collected on August 28 from Great Food Hall, Pacific Place, Admiralty for testing. Result showed that the total bacterial count of the sample was more than 300 000 000 per millilitre. According to the Milk Regulation (Cap 132 AQ), milk after heat-treatment by means of pasteurisation should not contain more than 30 000 bacteria per millilitre. The fact that total bacterial count exceeding the legal limit indicates unsatisfactory hygienic conditions, but does not mean it would lead to food poisoning."

     The CFS informed the vendor concerned of the irregularity and confirmed that the vendor concerned had stopped sale of the affected product. Prosecution will be initiated should there be sufficient evidence.

     The CFS will continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate follow-up action.
