The "Discover the Basic Law" multimedia interactive art exhibition opened at the Oasis Gallery in Central today (August 14). It is open to the public until August 27.
Organised by the Information Services Department in partnership with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), the exhibition aims to promote a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the Basic Law. It is one of a series of roving exhibitions to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law.
The artworks on display were created by 18 HKDI students who used the Basic Law as a source of artistic inspiration. The exhibition showcases a total of 25 artworks including illustrations, installations, typographic designs, sculptures and motion graphics.
At the centre of the exhibition are two large video walls with 26 monitors installed. With the use of special hand-held viewing glasses, visitors can "discover" hidden content, such as motion graphics, within some "blank" video screens.
The largest exhibit is a sculpture entitled "Book of life". With Basic Law inscriptions on two open pages, the book forms the foundation of two trees with branches showing the words "Rights" and "Freedoms". This shows that under the Basic Law, Hong Kong's rights and freedoms are protected and can be further developed.
Another eye-catching artwork resembles a giant padlock. Entitled "Lock", the sculpture is an artistic version of the Central Government Offices building standing at the top of the lock, symbolising the Government's obligation to protect property rights under the Basic Law.
Members of the public can also see the artworks on the Discover the Basic Law website at www.discoverthebasiclaw.gov.hk or via the mobile app "Discover the Basic Law".
The exhibition is being held at the Oasis Gallery on the second floor at 80 Des Voeux Road Central (the former Central Market). The opening hours are from 8.30am to 8pm. Admission is free and souvenirs will be distributed at the venue on a first-come, first-served basis.
The exhibition will next be held at the basement of Fashion World (Site 2), Wonderful Worlds of Whampoa, Whampoa Garden, Hung Hom, Kowloon, from October 9 to 15.
The "Discover the Basic Law" roving exhibition is being staged at different venues until the end of the year. Upcoming exhibition dates and venues will be available on the dedicated website.
